I deeply regret that I have to trouble His Majesty's Colonial ffice in these times with a commercial dispute such as this;
but you
will see, I am sure, that I have no alternative, bearing in mind your letter to my Company of the 4th January last, in which you asked us to

come to terms with Messrs. Reise & Co. as quickly as possible as to the ir appointment as my Company's agents, and that I have to show cause why all our endeavors in this direction have failed because of Messrs. . Reis Bros. & Co.'s extraordinary attitude.
It is perhaps hardly necessary to add that the proposals as cabled by the Hongkong Pank cannot possibly offer any basis for a settle- ment, not only because no terms whatever as to our share of commission and profit have been stated, but because my Company will never con sent to have its hands forced in this way and must insist that this statement as to refusing it part and cable facilities in Hongkong be withdrawn.
This is also what the Texas Company has instructed me to ask of
you, as I added to my cable.
